One of the more surprising critical hits of 2003, Sylvain Chomet's Belleville Rendezvous is a French animation that combines wit, charm with a twist of the grotesque. Beautifully painted backgrounds, rich with detail set the mood for this animated truimph. A grandmother and her dog set out to rescue her grandson, a cyclist who has been kidnapped by the French Mafia and is forced to race endlessly into a receding projected landscape. The search takes her to the USA where everyone is fat, although a seemingly stereotyped view Chomet equally challenges his own backyard where everything is grey and inconvenient. If you're an animation fan, this is a must have for the dvd collection. • Special Feature Information: |
